Historical Portraits - Printing and Typography

I was recently commissioned to paint three portraits depicting three of history's most influential people in the field of printing and typography: Bi Sheng, Johannes Gutenburg and Beatrice Warde. It was an interesting project as each portrait provided a unique challenge in depicting the subject in a realistic manner. References were unfortunately few and varied; from statues of Bi Sheng to illustrations and paintings of Johannes (his true likeness somewhat unclear due to the popular stylistic choices of the time) and some photos of Beatrice; but not depicting her at the angle or age that we wanted.
